Anuradhapura served as the capital of Sri Lanka for over 1,300 years, beginning in the 4th century BCE. This ancient city is renowned for its well-preserved ruins and continuous habitation, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Sacred Bodhi Tree

One of the city's most revered landmarks is the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree believed to be a sapling from the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted in 288 BCE, it is the oldest living human-planted tree with a known planting date.

Majestic Stupas

Anuradhapura is home to several colossal stupas (dagobas) that dominate the skyline. Notable stupas include:

• Ruwanwelisaya: Built by King Dutugemunu in 140 BCE, this stupa is one of the world's tallest ancient structures.

• Jetavanaramaya: Once the tallest stupa in the world, this massive brick structure was constructed by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE.

• Abhayagiri Dagoba: Another monumental stupa, it was a major monastic center and remains a symbol of Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage.

• Anuradhapura is famous for its advanced ancient irrigation systems, which include vast reservoirs (tanks) and intricate canal networks. These engineering marvels, such as the Basawakkulama (Abhayavapi) and Tissa Wewa tanks, highlight the ingenuity of ancient Sri Lankan engineers.
